Cells Flashcards
Cells, cell organisation and respiration (30 cards)
What is another word for a living thing?
An organism
Organisms are made of tiny building blocks, called what?
Cells
What do you use a microscope for?
To magnify tiny things that the eye can’t otherwise see (like cells)
Name some key words relevant to using a microscope
Specimen (object you look at), slide (the specimen is placed on the the slide in a drop of water), coverslip (a second slide over the top to keep the specimen safe), stain (can help you see parts of the cell)
What are the 7 life processes that organisms carry out?
Movement, reproduction, sensitivity, growth, respiration, excretion, nutrition
What are the 6 parts of a cell?
Cell surface membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, chloroplast, cell wall, vacuole
What is the cell surface membrane?
It is a thin skin around the cell that keeps the cell together and controls what goes into and out of the cell
What is the nucleus?
It controls the cell (a bit like a brain)
What is cytoplasm?
It is a jelly like substance where most chemical reactions happen (including respiration)
What is a chloroplast?
It contains chlorophyll to trap sunlight for photosynthesis
What is a cell wall?
It is made of cellulose and provides support
What is a vacuole?
It provides storage space and is filled with cell sap
What are the similarities between animal and plant cells?
Both have nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria
What do only plant cells have?
A cell wall, a vacuole and chloroplasts
What is a unicellular organism?
An organism that is made up of one cell
What do unicellular organisms have to help them survive?
Adaptations
What do a group of similar cells group together to become?
Tissue
What do a group of tissues work together to make?
An organ
What do a group of organs work together to make?
An organ system
What is a multicellular organism made up of?
Several organ systems
What is diffusion?
The way stuff moves into and out of cells
Respiration is a chemical reaction. Where does it happen?
In every cell of every living organism
What is respiration?
The process of releasing energy from glucose
Why is respiration important?
Because the energy released is used for all the other chemical reactions that keep you alive (like muscle contraction)
