Cells Flashcards
(18 cards)
What are all living things made from?
Cells
What are the 2 types of cells?
Prokaryotic
Eukaryotic
What is a Eukaryotic cell?
A cell that contains a nucleus
What is a prokaryotic cell?
A cell that doesn’t have a nucleus
What are the different parts of a cell called?
Sub-cellular structures
What is the nucleus?
Contains genetic material (DNA) that controls activities of the cell
What is the cytoplasm?
Gel- like substance where chemical reactions occur. It contains enzymes
What is the cell membrane?
Holds the cell together and controls what goes in an do out
What is the mitochondria?
This is where aerobic respiration takes place. Respiration transfers energy that the cell needs to work.
What are ribosomes?
These are where proteins are made in the cell.
What is a cell wall?
Made of cellulose. It supports the cell and strengthens it
What is a permanent vacuole?
Contains cell sap
What is cell sap?
A weak solution of sugars and salts
What is the chloroplast?
Where photosynthesis occurs. They contain a green substance called chlorophyll.
What is chlorophyll?
A green substance which absorbs the light needed for photosynthesis
What do prokaryotic cells such as bacteria cells have instead of a nucleus?
They have a singular strand of DNA that floats freely in the cytoplasm. They may also contain one or more small rings of DNA called plasmids
What don’t bacteria cells have that animal and plant cells do?
Chloroplast
Mitochondria
If you get to estimate the area of sub-cellular structure in an exam what is the equation?
Length x Width = Area
