cells Flashcards
(32 cards)
What is the Cell Theory?
The Cell Theory states that all organisms are composed of cells, all cells come from pre-existing cells (biogenesis), and the cell is the smallest living organizational unit.
What are common cell features?
Common cell features include: cell membrane, cytoplasm, DNA, and ribosomes.
What is the function of the cell membrane?
The cell membrane separates the interior of the cell from the outside environment.
What is cytoplasm?
Cytoplasm is a gel-like substance that makes up most of the cell.
What does DNA do?
DNA carries hereditary information.
What is the role of ribosomes?
Ribosomes are responsible for the synthesis of proteins.
What is cytology?
Cytology is the study of cells.
What is histology?
Histology is the study of tissue structure.
What are lysosomes?
Lysosomes use chemicals to break down food and worn-out cell parts.
What is the function of the nucleus?
The nucleus is the control center of the cell.
What does the nucleolus do?
The nucleolus produces ribosomes.
What do vacuoles store?
Vacuoles store food, water, waste, etc.
What is the function of the Golgi body?
The Golgi body receives protein materials from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and distributes them.
What does the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) do?
The ER carries proteins and other materials from one part of the cell to another.
What is the role of chloroplasts?
Chloroplasts capture energy from sunlight and use it to produce food in plant cells.
What do mitochondria produce?
Mitochondria produce energy for the cell to function.
