cells Flashcards
organelles and their functions (9 cards)
what is the nucleus?
holds the DNA, RNA and chromosomes of a cell
what is the cell membrane?
allows substances to move in and out of the cell via diffusion, osmosis or active transport
what is the golgi apparatus?
modifies, stores and packs proteins and lipids from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER)
what are the centrioles?
use the spindle formation to pull chromosomes to either side of the nucleus during cell division
what is the rough endoplasmic reticulum?
has ribosomes attached to its surface and makes proteins
what is the smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
does NOT have any ribosomes attached to its surface but makes lipids
what are lysosomes?
act as the stomach for the cell, and contain digestive enzymes that break down waste products, damaged parts of cells and bacteria
what is the mitochondria?
(POWERHOUSE OF THE CELL in deep booming voice)
produces energy called ATP
what are ribosomes?
the site of protein synthesis (where proteins are made)
