Cells Flashcards
(23 cards)
Living thing/ organism
It is living and does 7 things to show that it is alive. Movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion and nutrition.
Cell
The building blocks of life. All living things are made of cells or just one cell.
Cell membrane
The outside layer of a cell that acts like a barrier and lets things in and out of the cell.
Nucleus
The place in the cell where DNA is stored and all activities in the cell are controlled.
Cytoplasm
The jelly-like substance inside the cell where most of the chemical reactions occur.
Mitochondria
This is where respiration happens. They release energy for the cell.
Cell wall
The layer outside the cell membrane only found in plant cells. To protect the cell and give it support.
Vacuole
Stores food for the cell and contains cell sap.
Chloroplast
To absorb energy from the sun for photosynthesis. Found in plant cells and in some unicellular organisms.
Eyepiece lens
The lens where you see through containing 10x zoom.
Objective lens
The lens that zooms in on specimen and contains 10x,20x and 40x zoom.
Coarse focus
The big wheel on a microscope that roughly focuses on the specimen.
Fine focus
The small wheel on a microscope that focuses on a rough image and fully focuses on it until you can see a clear image.
Stage
The part on the microscope where the slide is placed and stage clips are found.
Total magnification
The amount of magnification after multiplying the eyepiece lens magnification by the objective lens magnification. e.g. 10x40=400x total magnification.
Unicellular organism
A living organism that is mad up of only one cell.
Diffusion
The term used to describe the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
Hazard symbols
Symbols that warn you of hazards.
Nerve cell adaptations
Connections at each end
Long and stretchy
Red blood cell adaptations
Contains haemoglobin which carries oxygen
Sperm cell adaptations
Tail for swimming
Head for joining with egg cell
Root hair cell adaptations
Long root hair for collecting water and minerals
Large vacuole for storing food
Binary fission
The term used to describe how cells reproduce.
