Cells And Mitosis Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is mitosis?
Cells divide making copies of chromosomes to reproduce asexually for growth or repair
What happens during mitosis?
A parent cell divides into two identical daughter cells. These daughter cells divide in two and so on.
Mitosis also replaces old and damaged cells and allows organisms to asexually reproduce
What is the first stage of mitosis?
Interphase
A cell has 2 versions of each chromosome-one from each parent.
Humans have 23 chromosomes.
What is the second stage of mitosis?
Prophase
Chromosomes condense. Spindle fibres start to form, nuclear envelope breaks down and so the chromosomes are free in the cytoplasm
What is the third stage of mitosis?
Metaphase
Chromosomes line up along the equator and attach to the spindle.
What is the fourth stage of mitosis?
Anaphase
Each pair of sister chromotids separate. The spindle pulls each chromotid to opposite holes.
What is the fifth stage of mitosis?
Telophase
Chromotids reach the poles. The nuclear envelope reforms around each group of chromosomes so there are now 2 nuclei. The cytoplasm starts to divide occurs. Produces 2 identical daughter cells
What is the cell cycle ?
Series of stages where the cell prepares itself to divide and the stages of division.
Why is the cell cycle needed ?
- needed for organisms to grow
- growth and repair identical cells
What is the chemical molecule that chromosomes are made of ?
DNA
