Cells Biology Flashcards
(30 cards)
What are Cells ?
Cells are the building blocks of life.
What is Mitosis ?
Mitosis is a type of cell division and occurs when more cells are needed. It produces two new identical cells at the end.
What is Osmosis ?
Osmosis is the movement of water from a less concentrated solution to a more concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane.
What is Diffusion ?
The movement of particles(molecules or ions)from an area of a higher concentration to a lower concentration
What is Microscopy ?
Microscopy is the use of microscopes
What is Cell Division ?
The division of a cell into two daughter cells with the same genetic material.
What is Active Transport ?
Active transport is the process by which dissolved molecules move across a cell membrane from a lower to a higher concentration. Goes against concentration gradient.
Cytoplasm
A part in a cell where chemical reactions take place
Nucleus
Controls the cell activity
Cell Membrane
Controls what comes in and out of the cell
Cell Wall
Strengthens the cell
A space within the cytoplasm of plant cells that contains cell sap.
Vacuole
Contains the green pigment chlorophyll; the site of photosynthesis.
Chloroplast
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic Acid
Binary Fission
It is the most common form of reproduction in prokaryotes and occurs in some single-celled eukaryotes. After replicating its genetic material, the cell divides into two nearly equal sized daughter cells.
Mitochindria
Where respiration takes place
Ribosomes
Where proteins are made.
White Blood Cell
also called leukocytes or leucocytes, are the cells of the immune system that are involved in protecting the body against both infectious disease and foreign invaders.
Red Blood Cell
Haemoglobin is the protein inside red blood cells that carries oxygen. Red blood cells also remove carbon dioxide from your body, transporting it to the lungs for you to exhale. Red blood cells are made inside your bones, in the bone marrow.
Sperm Cell
Male Reproductive Cell
Egg Cell
Female Reproductive Cell
Root Hair Cell
Plants absorb water from the soil by osmosis. Root hair cells are adapted for this by having a large surface area to speed up osmosis. The absorbed water is transported through the roots to the rest of the plant where it is used for different purposes.
Guard Cell
To open and close the stomata depending on the conditions.
Nerve Cell
Nerve cells are also called neurones. The nervous system uses electrical impulses to bring about fast, but short-lived, responses.
