Cells (chapter 1) Flashcards
(9 cards)
Ribosome
synthesizes proteins
smooth endoplasmic reticulum
synthesizes lipids and steroids
rough endoplasmic reticulum
synthesizes proteins, the function of detoxification - removal of harmful substances
mitochondria
Undergo aerobic respiration to break down nutrients and release energy for the cell to use( growth and reproduction)
what parts are red blood cells lacking
nucleus and mitochondria
lack of mitochondria in red blood cells because..?
Mitochondria releases energy. If they have mitochondria, the red blood cells will then use up the oxygen it is carrying and thus it will be used up by the cell instead.
Why animal cells have no cell wall
- cell wall provide rigid structure
- animals need to move around
- cell wall will restrict their movement, cause them to be unable to move/move well
why red-blood cells have bi-concaved shape?
INCREASE surface area for haemoglobin to react and bind with MORE oxygen, to carry MORE oxygen to different parts of the body
Golgi body
stores and packages substances to be expelled from the cell.
