CELLS (Chapter 3) Flashcards
(20 cards)
Cell
The smallest unit that can preform all life processes
Nucleus
Contains the cells DNA
Cytoplasm
Fluid that the organelles are set in
Cell Membrane
The barrier between the inside of a cell and the cell’s environment
Cell Wall
A rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrane and provides support for the cell.
Found in plant cells only
Mitochondria
The site of cellular respiration.
Allows the cells to use energy
Chloroplast
Organelles in plant and algae cells in which photosynthesis takes place
Golgi Complex
Packages materials to be transported throughout the cell
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
Allows for the transport of cellular materials
Ribosome
Organelles that make proteins, which are building materials for the cell
Lysosome
Digests waste products in a cell
Vacuole
Stores water in the cell
Organelle
Structures that perform specific functions within the cell
Prokaryote
Prokaryotes are organisms whose cells lack a nucleus and other organelles.
Eukaryote
Any cell or organism that possesses a clearly defined nucleus.
Tissue
A group or layer of cells that work together to perform a specific function.
Organ
A part of the body that performs a specific function. For example, the heart is an organ.
Organ System
A group of organs and tissues that work together to perform specific functions.
Organism
A living thing made up of one or more cells and able to carry on the activities of life
Structure
The cell structure comprises individual components with specific functions essential to carry out life’s processes.
