Cells Vocab Flashcards
(20 cards)
Cell
In biology, the smallest unit that can perform all life processes; cells are covered by a member all have DNA and cytoplasm.
Nucleus
In a eukaryotic cell, a membrane-bound organelle that contains the cell’s DNA and that has a role in processes such as growth, metabolism, and reproduction.
Cytoplasm
Fluid that the organelles are set in. Kind of like lawns and parking lots.
Cell membrane
The barrier between the inside of a cell and the cell’s environment. Kind of like a city limits.
Cell Wall
A rigid structure that surrounds a cell membrane and provides support to the cell. Found in plant cells ONLY. Like a city wall.
Mitochondria
The sight of cellular respiration. Allows the cell to use energy. Like a power plant.
Chloroplast
Organelles in plant and algae cells in witch photosynthesis takes place. Solar energy plant.
Golgi Complex
Packages materials to be transported throughout the cell. Like a post office.
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Allows for the transport of the cellular materials. Like roads and highways.
Vacuole
Stores water in the cell. Like a water tower.
Ribosome
Organelles that make proteins, which are building materials for the cell. Like a lumber yard.
Lysome
Digests wast products in a cell. Like garbage trucks.
Organelle
Structures that perform specific functions within the cell.
Prokaryote
An organism that consists of a single cell that does not have a nucleus.
Eukaryote
An organism made up of cells that have a nucleus enclosed by a membrane; eukaryotes include animals, plants, and fungi, but not archaebacteria or eubacteria.
Organ
A collection of tissues that carry out a specialized function of the body.
Tissue
A group of similar cells that perform a common function.
Organ system
a group of organs that work together to perform body functions.
Organism
A living thing; anything that can carry out life processes independently.
Structure
The arrangement of parts in an organism.
