Cells (YR 8) Flashcards
(18 cards)
What are the mitochondria and what do they do?
The powerhouse organelle of the cell and the site of energy production. (singular - mitochondrion)
What are ribosomes?
The cell organelle where protein production takes place.
What is chlorophyll and what does it do?
A green pigment found inside chloroplasts that absorbs solar energy into chemical energy.
Define unicellular.
A single cell organism.
What is an example of a unicellular organism?
- Bacteria
- Archaeans
- Ciliate
Define multicellular.
An organism that consists of multiple cells.
What is an example of a multicellular organism?
- Humans
- Dogs
- Cats
What is an organelle?
The smaller part of a cell, each one having a different function.
What is a cell?
A building block of living things.
What is microbiology?
The science including the study of microscopic organisms.
What are prokaryotes?
Organisms whose cells lack a nucleus.
What are eukaryotes?
Organisms that possess a clear nucleus.
What are examples of prokaryotes?
- Bacteria
- Archaea
What are examples of eukaryotes?
- Animals
- Fungi
What is the cell theory?
The theory describing the properties that all cells have in common.
- All living things are made up of cells.
- Living cells only come from existing living cells.
- Cells are the basic unit of structure in living things.
What is the nucleus?
The structure in a cell that contains the chromosomes.
What is homeostasis?
A state of balance among all the body systems needed to survive.
What is ATP energy?
The source of energy and storage at the cellular level.
