Q

Name four passive processes in the movement of particles through a cell membrane

Q

What is a passive process in the movement of particles through a cell membrane

A

No cellular energy is required. Uses pressure, concentration gradients and kinetic energy.
The net movement of solute from an area of high concentration to a low concentration until equilibrium.

Q

Osmosis (Passive Process) - Hypertonic solution means

A

There are more solutes (such as salts) in the intercellular solution than in the cell. So more water particles in the cell than in the intercellular fluid.

Q

Osmosis (Passive Process) -Hypotonic solution means

A

There are fewer (less) particule solutes (such as salt) in the intercellular (extracellular) solution than in the cell. There are more water particles in the intercellular fluid than in the cell.

Q

Osmosis (Passive Process) - Isotonic solution means

A

The solution has the same number of solute particles as the cell, so the solution is isoosmotic to the cell. The solute particles cannot cross the membrane, so there will be no net flow of water into or out of the cell, meaning that the solution is isotonic to the cell.

12
Q

What is the process your kidneys use to reclaim water from your body?

A

Osmosis - the kidneys change the salt levels on either side of the filter units.

Exocytosis removes substances by

A

Cell secretion

19

Endocytosis and exocytosis are both examples of

A

bulk transport (bulk transport is an active process- requires atp)
