Central Nervous System drugs Flashcards
(20 cards)
Define nueropharmacology.
Study of drugs that after processes controlled by the nervous system
What is CNS drugs?
Used by psychiatric disorders, suspression of seizures, relief of pain, production of anesthesia
What does metabolosism mean?
Change medications into less active/ inactive form by the action of enzymes
What does axonal conductation do?
Conducting an action potential down the axon of the neuron
What does synaptic transmission do?
Process by which imformation is carried a cross the gap between nueron and postsynaptic cell
Bloodbrain barrier do?
Impedes the entry of drug into the body
What is parkinson’s disease?
Slowly progressive nuerodegenerative disorder characterized by tremor, rigidity, postural instability and slowed movement
What is assesment?
Assess motor symptoms and the extent which they interfere which acitivites of daily living
What is therapeutic goal?
Improve the patient’s ability to carry out activities of daily life
Dopaminergic drugs do?
Direclty/indirectly cause activation of dopamine receptors
Anticholinergic agents do?
Drugs that block receptors for ACh
What is epilepsy?
Group of disorders characterized by excessive exitablility of nuerons of the CNS
Seizure means?
General term that appllies to all of epileptic events
Convulsion means?
Abnormal motor phenomenon
What is partial seizures?
Excitation undergoes limited spread from the focus to adjacent cortical areas
What is generalized seizures?
Excitation spreads widely throughout both hemispheres of the brain
What is phenytoin?
Most commonly prescribed anticonvulsant drug
What is phenobarbital?
Effective againts partial seizures and generalized tonic-clonic seizures but not absence seizures
What is carbamazepine?
Cornerstone of epilepsy therapy and active againt partial seizures and tonic-clonic seizures but not absence seizures
What is nueromuscular blocking drugs?
Relax skeletal muscle by disrupting the transmission of nerve impulse at the motor and plate
