Central Nervous System Drugs Flashcards
(20 cards)
The study of drugs that alter processes controlled by the nervous system
Neuropharmacology
It is used for psychiatric disorders, suppression of seizures, relief of pain, and production of anesthesia.
Central Nervous System (CNS) Drugs
A strong central nervous system stimulant that is used in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and narcolepsy
Amphetamines
What is Parkinson’s Disease?
It is a slowly progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by tremor, rigidity, postural instability, and slowed movement.
It is the drug deployed for Parkinson’s disease that will directly or indirectly cause activation of dopamine receptors.
Dopaminergic Drugs
What are the two types of Epilepsy?
Seizure - is a general term that applies to all types of epileptic events.
Convulsion - an abnormal motor phenomenon. Uncontrollable muscle contractions.
What the the two types of seizure?
Petit mal - Usually for children
Grand mal - Tonic-clonic seizure violent muscle contractions.
What are the two major type of seizure?
Partial Seizure - Excitation undergoes limited spread from the focus to adjacent cortical areas.
Generalized Seizures - Excitation spreads widely throughout both hemispheres of the brain.
It is the drug agent deployed for Parkinson’s disease that blocks receptors for ACh.
Anticholinergic Agents
How many liters of oxygen should be given to the patient diagnosed with COPD?
3 liters
What is the use of Phenobarbital drug?
It is effective against partial seizures and generalized tonic-clonic seizures but not absence seizures.
What is a Muscle Spasm?
Defined as an involuntary contraction of a muscle or muscle group.
Relaxed skeletal muscles by disrupting the transmission of nerve impulses at the motor end plate.
Neuromuscular Blocking Drugs
It is a competitive and stabilizing drugs
Non-Depolarizing Blocking Drugs
What is Succinylcholine?
A synthetic compound used as a short-acting muscle relaxant and local anesthetic. It is an ester of choline with succinic acid.
Define Abstinence Syndrome
Withdrawing from a substance that has the potential to cause addiction.
What is three medication for Abstinence Maintenance?
Disulfiram - Should not be used concurrently with alcohol.
Naltrexone - Suppresses craving and pleasurable effects of alcohol.
Acamprosate - Decreases unpleasant effects resulting from abstinence.
What is Opioid Addiction?
A withdrawal syndrome occurs within 1 hour to several days after cessation of substance use.
It is the treatment of respiratory depression caused by drug overdose and COPD
Doxapram
It impedes the entry of drugs into the brain
Blood-Brain Barrier
