Centripetal Force Flashcards
(6 cards)
What is centripetal force
A CENTER SEEKING FORCE IN A CLOSED PATH.
trajectory of an object travels in a closed path about a point due to a force pulling it in the direction of the point.
Newton’s “Principia”
centripetal force is that by which bodies are drawn or impelled towards a point as to a center
Centrifugal force
INERTIA IN DISGUISE
-object will fly tangentially, not radially
Describe centripetal force seen in a hammer throw
spin hammer in a circle; athlete pulls in (CF) and acts as axis of rotation; hammer pulls outward because it wants to go in a straight line not in a circle; upon release, hammer will go tangentially and straight.
Describe the relationship between angular velocity and centripetal force
2x angular velocity (spin) : 4x the CF (inward pull)
Why do speed skaters lean into curve?
athlete uses outward push against the ice and provides CF
