Intro: Brief Retelling

A

Jesus went to Capernaum when a centurion there has a servant who was sick and near death. The centurion sent some Jewish elders to Jesus to ask him to come and heal his sevent. Jesus went with them, and was not very far from the house when the centurion sent word to him by some friends: ‘Sir, do not put yourself to trouble, because I am not worthy to have you under my roof and for this same reason I did not presume to come to you myself, and have soldiers under me; and I say to one man: ‘Go!’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.” When Jeus heard this he was astonished by the mans faith – ‘I tell you, not even in Israel have I found faith like this’.

Q

Para 1: Context

A

Context – Centurian would have been a gentile.
General: The centurion’s humility is a unusual due to his ethnicity. Roman soldiers were trained to think of themselves as superior to those whom they conquered and presided over, especially in regard to the Jews, whom they scorned. However, the centurion humbles himself significantly before the Jewish rabbi, Jesus, giving Him great honor by abasing himself to the point that he says he is not worthy even of being in His presence. From this we can learn….

Q

Para 2: What we can learn about Jesus…

A

His incredible power and authority, that he can heal a man close to death but without even seeing them.
His love and compassion for all people – it doesn’t matter if the man is not Jew – ‘I have come to call all siners, not the righteous.’

Q

Para 3: Importance of faith

A

Making the point that a Gentiles faith is greater than any in Israel. Attack on Jewish leaders. Real children of God are those not simply born into it but those who have faith. Man shows incredible faith, although he is not a Jew as he recogniszes Jesus faith and authority – he knows that Jesus can heal from a distance and respects Jesus so much that he doesn’t want him to have to come under a Gentiles roof.
Since the centurion is a Gentile, he has no promise by covenant of God’s mercy, as do the Israelites. Thus, for him to have this kind of faith is a rare and great thing. His faith sees Christ’s power, and he declares His holiness as a witness to other Gentiles. His faith shows his acceptance and respect of Christ as Savior and his submission to His will. He even believes that no direct contact is necessary for Jesus to perform the miracle! The centurion sees no restrictions on Christ’s power and ability to heal his servant. He understands that nothing limits God.
