Cerebral Palsey Flashcards
(43 cards)
Cerebral
Of the brain
Palsey
Lack of Muscle Controls
What type of disease is CP
Non progressive neurological disorder to the developing brain
How is CP mainly characterized?
mainly motor dyfunction
Can you live a normal life with CP
Yes, CP is a non life threatening disease
Prenatal causes of CP (before Birth)
- Herpes
- Rubella
- Toxoplasmosis
- Drugs or alcohol
- Genetic Factors
Perinatal Causes (During or shortly Birth)
- Prematurity
- Low birth weight
- aspyxia-prolonged labour
- poor nutrition
- intraventrical hemmorhage
Postnatal Causes of CP
- infection
- CVA
- Head Injury
- Drowning accidents
- Cardiac Arrest
- Poisoning or lead exposure
Spasticity
Increased resistance to passive stretch
Hypotonia
low muscle tone-floppy and passive
Athetosis
flucuating muscle tone
Rigidity
severe muscle tone- difficulty to move any limb in any direction
Ataxia
Difficulty with coordination
Primitive Reflexes
Group of reflexes children are born with
Purpose of primitive reflexes
help infant learn and organize motor skills and for saftey
Examples of Primitive Reflexes
Rooting Reflex-Feeding
Turning Reflex- Clear airway
Withdrawl Reflex- protection
When is it expected for children to stop displaying Primitive Reflexes
After about a year - replaced by postrual reflexes
What are Postural reflexes for
Help infant learn control of automatic balance, posture and voluntary movement
What is Cerebral Palsey characterized by
Persistance of Primitive Reflexes which can impede development of normal motor patterns
ATNR- Asymetrical Tonic Neck Reflex
if head is rotated there is extension of arm to side the head is turned to, flexion of other arm. ( archer)
Normal until about 6 months
What activities does ATNR interfere with
Feeding Visual Tracking Midline use of hands Bilateral hand use Rolling Crawling
STNR-Symetrical Tonic Neck Reflex
flexion of neck produces flexion of lower extremities
When is STNR normal
8-12 months for normal development of crawling
What will STNR effect if present in a older child
coordination of upper and lower portions of body
ex-swimming, poor hand eye cordination
