Cgpt Electricity Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is current?
Current is the flow of electric charge around a circuit, measured in amperes (A).
What is potential difference?
Potential difference (voltage) is the energy transferred per coulomb of charge, measured in volts (V).
What is resistance?
Resistance slows down the flow of current, measured in ohms (Ω).
State the equation linking current, voltage, and resistance.
V = I \times R (Voltage = Current × Resistance)
What does an ammeter measure and where is it placed?
It measures current and is placed in series with components.
What does a voltmeter measure and where is it placed?
It measures voltage and is placed in parallel across components.
What is an ohmic conductor?
A conductor where current is directly proportional to voltage (e.g. a resistor).
What happens to the resistance of a filament lamp as temperature increases?
Resistance increases.
What is the symbol for a cell?
One long line (positive) and one short line (negative).
In a series circuit, how does current behave
The same current flows through all components
: In a series circuit, how is voltage shared
It is shared between all components.
In a parallel circuit, how does current behave?
It splits between branches.
In a parallel circuit, how is voltage across each branch?
Voltage is the same across all branches.
What is a fuse and how does it work?
A safety device that melts when current is too high, breaking the circuit.
What is the function of the earth wire in a plug?
It provides a path for current to flow safely to the ground if the live wire touches the casing.
What is AC and DC?
AC (alternating current) changes direction, DC (direct current) flows one way.
