What is a prescription?
an order for medication issued by a licensed practitioner
What are the ways a prescription may be delivered to the pharmacy?
written, electronic, verbal, fax, or refill

C II controlled substances
What schedule medication cannot be refilled?
Schedule II
Schedule III-V medications can be refilled how many times?
up to 5 times before the expiration
What prescriber information needs to be present on a prescription?
the prescriber’s name, NPI, DEA number if the substance is controlled, the facility name, address, and phone number
When does a non-controlled prescription expire?
after 1 year
What prescriptions expire after 30 days?
Schedule II
What prescriptions expire after six months?
Schedule III-V
What does DAW mean?
dispense as written
What is the sig on a prescription?
the directions for how the patient will take the medication
What three components must be included in a prescription sig?
dose quantity, route of administration, and dose frequency
