Ch 1-2 Flashcards
(32 cards)
What is the second value of forestry
Forest keep winters warmer and summers cooler
Whats the first value of forrestry
The best soils are found in the forrest, trees keep the soil from washing and blowing away
What is the third value of forestry
Forest purify water, create conditions that keep an abundance of resources
What is the fourth value of forestry
Air is purified and replenished by trees
What is the fifth vale of forestry
Provide wood from many humans to use for many reasons
What is the sixth reason for forestry
Source of raw materials
How much of pei is woodland?
48%
How much of Canada is woodland?
45%
How much of peis woodland is privately owned
90%
How much of Canadas wood land is privately owned
9%
What is stewardship?
To protect something, Stewards don’t necessarily own the item but they are responsible to cared and nurture of the item.
Sustainability
The ability to use the forest with out damaging or reducing the production or quality of the forest for the future
. Studying something for its own sake, motivated by the by the desire to expand human knowledge of the universe… Gov and uni conduct these experiments
Basic science
Science directed toward the development of technology or the development of products which can be marketed by industrial society
Applied science
What is soil
Soil is the thin layer of a material on the earths surface in which land plants grow. A well developed, healthy soil is a dynamic system of plants, gases minerals, decomposing organic matter and water
Can soil be destroyed
Yes, by a process of weathering which helped create the soil also destroys the soil. Soil easily destroys when the bonds between the soil particles are eliminated. 1 cm of soil takes up to 500 years.
First soil texture
Sand- the largest particle, feels loose and gritty. Providing spaces for the air and water in the soil which plants need
The second typeof soil texture
Slit- the smallest particle size, slit particles help slow the movement of water through the soil. Allowing plants the opportunity to absorb the moisture
Whats the third type of soil
Clay- any particle whose diameter is less than 0.002, clay particles gives soil a sticky texture, like glue.
Weathering caused by glaciation, wind and water erosion, freezing and thawing cycles.
Physical
Weathering caused by mild acids, formed by water interacting with atmosphere gases or minerals in the rocks
Chemical
Agents can colonize bare minerals surfaces
Biological
What is loam soil
Loam soil is a mixture of the three soil types, if one texture predominates then the soil is called x-loam ex. Slit loam
The amount of space between the soil particles
Soil porosity
