Communication Process
Composed of several elements necessary for communication event including people, message, channel, interference, feedback, and context
Speaker and listener
Communication is between people. Each bring experiences, goals, values, attitudes, beliefs, and knowledge, which affect what is says and interpreted in event.
Frames of reference
Culture and gender, life experiences
Verbal Messages
Words used in the encounter
Nonverbal Messages
Actions and behaviors. Differ based on communicators frames of reference.
Channels
What we communicate through. Face to face, telephone, computer, or video.
External Interference
Static or noise that distracts the speaker or listener from the message, like loud music, traffic, people laughing or talking, or bad connection on telephone or email server
Internal Interference
Cause listeners and speakers to lack concentration and may include personal concerns, physical ailments, stress, or conflict
Feedback
Important to communication process and involves both the speaker and listener simultaneously. As speaker sends message, the listener is responding either verbally or nonverbally
Context
Time of day, location, or social situation

Actional Model
Linear process of communication. Speaker sends a message to listener who receives the message. Communication has beginning and ending.
Interactional Model
Considers role of feedback in communication process. Listener responds to speaker. Sends and receives messages back and forth.
Transactional Model
Simultaneous sending and receiving of messages that occur in context . Feedback is constant verbally and nonverbally between both people.
Competent Communicator
Having knowledge, skill, motivation and judgement
Goals for Text
Be a competent communicator, confident communicator, ethical communicator and critical thinker
Critical thinker
Ability to defer judgement until you have enough information on what to act on
Information Literacy
Being able to find appropriate sources, analyze the material, evaluate the credibility of the sources, and to use and cite those sources ethically and legally

Being able to critically evaluate all you see in the mass media
