CH 1 Review Flashcards
(25 cards)
chemistry
the field of study concerned with the characteristics composition, and transformations of matter
Matter
anything that has a mass and occupies space
3 physical statuses exist matter:
solid, liquid, gas
solid
the physical state can hold characterized by an definite shape and a definite volume
liquid
the physical state to drink characterized by an indefinite shape and definite volume
gas
the physical state characterized by an indefinite shape and definite volume
chemical property
a characteristic of a substance that describes the way that the substance undergoes or resists change to form a new substance
chemical property example
iron rusting
physical property example
copper metal can be drawn into thin wires
chemical change
a process in which a substance undergoes a chemical composition
pure substance
single kind of matter that cannot be separated into other kinds of matter by any physical kind of means
mixture
physical combination of 2 or more pure substances in which each substance returns it’s own chemical identity
heterogeneous mixture
is a mixture that contains visibly different phrases (parts) each with different properties
homogenous mixture
a mixture that contains only one visible phrase (parts) which has properties throughout
element
pure substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical or physical means
compound
can be broken down into consistent element by chemical, but not physical means
physical combinations
of a substances produces a mixture
chemical combinations of substances produce compound entities that are bound together
chemical combinations
chemical symbol
a one or two-letter designation for an element derived from the element name
atom
the smallest possible particle of an element that can exist and still have the properties of an element
molecule
a group of two or more atoms that functions as a unit because the atoms are tightly bounded together
diatomic molecule
a molecule that contains 2 atoms. It is the simplest type of molecule that exists
triatomic molecule
a molecule that contains 3 atoms
heteroatomic molecule
a molecule in which 2 or more atoms are present
