What are the three classifications that Aristotle uses?
Autocracy- rule by one person
Oligarchy- rule by few people
Democracy- rule by many people
What are the major types of government?
Autocracy, monarchy oligarchy and democracy.
What is an autocracy?
The system of government in which one person has all the authority and power to rule.
What is a monarchy?
A form of government in which one person has great power; king. Queen. Or emperor inherits the throne and heads that state.
How does a monarchs power get limited?
By tradition or law
What is absolute monarchy?
A monarch with all and absolute power. He doesn’t have to listen to the people.
What is dictatorship a result of in modern times?
Military coup or seizure of power.
What is totalitarianism?
A single ruler who tries to control the whole society.
What is an oligarchy?
A system of government in which a small group holds power.
Where do oligarchies get their power?
Their wealth, social position, military power, or all three
What is a democracy?
A system of government in which rule is by the people, either through representatives or directly.
Who were not considered citizens in early years?
Women, foreign residents, and slaves.
Who were the only one allowed to vote?
Landowners, merchants, or professional person with significant wealth.
What is a direct democracy?
A government in which all citizens cast a vote directly on government issues and laws
What is a representative democracy?
A government in which the people elect representatives and give them the responsibility to make laws and conduct government.
