How do you care for an embedded/impaled object?

What is an occlusive dressing?
Dressing that closes a wound or damaged part of the body to prevent exposure to air or water
When would you use occlusive dressing and what time of material?
For chest and abdominal injuries
Plastic wrap
What is the purpose of an elastic roller bandage,
Keeps continuous pressure on a body part to control swelling
What damage can occur if a elastic roller bandage is applied incorrectly,
It would restrict blood flow
How do you care for a minor open wound?
Gloves
Direct pressure for a few minutes to control bleeding
Wash wound thoroughly with soap and water
Cover wound with clean dressing and a bandage
Remove gloves and wash hands
What is a partial thickness burn?
(2nd degree)
Epidermis and dermis
Red, wet skin and blisters
What is a superficial burn?
(1st degree)
Epidermis only
Red dry skin
What is a full thickness burn
(3rd degree)
All layers of skin and underlying tissue
Skin may be brown or charred and underlying tissue may be white
What is a critical burn?
Potentially life threatening, disabling, and disfiguring that requires EMS
How do you care for a liquid chemical burn?
Flush with large amounts of cold tap water for 20 mins and minimize shock
How do you care for a dry chemical burn?
Brush off chemical with gloves or towel, flush with large amounts of cold tap water and minimize shock
What are signs and symptoms of an infection?
Area around becomes swollen and red
Area may feel warm or throb with pain
Pus discharge
Red streaks to the direction of heart
Describe 4 burn situations that require a 911 call
Trouble breathing
Burns cover large part of body
Burn resulting from chemicals, explosion, or electricity
Suspected burns to airway
Whats the difference between a tendon and ligament?
Tendons attach muscle to the bone, while ligaments hold bones together at a joint
What is an open fracture
When the fracture has broken skin and the bone may be sticking out
What are signs/symptoms of a dislocation?
Joints no longer function properly
displaced part of bone often forms a bump, a ridge or a hollow that does not normally exist
Four signs of serious musculoskeletal injury
Snapping sound
Significant deformity
Bone fragments sticking out
Feel bones grating
What is the purpose of immobilization
Lessen pain
Prevent further damage to soft tissue
Reduce the risk of bleeding
Prevents closed fractures from becoming open ones
What’s a soft splint and what would you use it for?
Folded blankets, towels, pillows, or triangular bandage
Shoulder, elbow or upper arm
What’s a ridged splint and what would you use it for?
Padded board, folded magazine, or news paper

Persons own body
Leg, knee or broken finger
What are the characteristics of a broken femur?
Significant deformity
One leg is noticeably shorter than the other
Injured leg may be turned outward
What is manual stabilization and when should you NOT use it?
A technique used to achieve spinal motion restriction by manually supporting the persons head and neck in the position found without the use of any equipment
