Ch 10 Spinal cord and apinal nerves Flashcards
(19 cards)
Vertebral column
24 spinal vertebra plus sacrum and coccyx
Meninges
Dura matter , arachnoid , pia matter
Cerebrospinal fluid CNS
found b/w dura mater and the arachnoid mater
acts as a cushion around the spinal cord and brain
Blood brain barrier
composed of selective cells that prevent toxins from entering the CNS from blood
spinal cord runs from where
the inferior part of the brain to the level of L1
Conus Medullaris
where the spinal cord arts to taper and end at the L1
Filum terminale
arises from the conus medullaris
extension of the pia mater that fuses with the arachnoid and dura mater
Spinal Roots
2 bundles of axons connect each spinal nerve to a segment of the spinal cord
Posterior Root
Sensory
Anterior Root
motor
Nerve roots inside spinal cord
Grey matter -central “butterfly shape”
white matter -peripheral
dermatomes
the area of skin that provides sensory information to a specific spinal level.
Cervical plexus
C1-C5
phrenic nerve- causes contraction of the diaphragm for breathing
Brachial plexus
C5-T1
distribution to upper extremities
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome- compression of the brachial plexus associated w/ vascular compression
lumbar plexus
L1-L4
Supplies part of abdomen , external genitalia & part of lower limbs
Sacral Plexus
S1-S4
supplies butt , perineum and part of lower limb
Coccygeal plexus
S4, S5 and coccygeal
Sensory tract
referred to ascending tracts
motor tracts
descending tracts
