Ch 10 Vocab And Theorems Flashcards
(26 cards)
Face
Each polygon of a polyhedron
Polyhedron
A three-dimensional figure who surfaces are polygons.
Edge
A segment that is formed by the intersection of two faces
Vertex
A point where three or more edges intersect
Net
A two-dimensional pattern that you can fold to form a three dimensional figure.
Cube
A polyhedron with six faces, each of which is a square
Cross-section
The intersection of a solid and it plane
Prism
A polyhedron with exactly two congruent, parallel faces, called bases
Lateral faces
Other faces of a polyhedron that are not bases
Altitude of a prism
A perpendicular segment that joins the planes of the bases
Height of a prism
The length of the altitude
Right prism
The lateral faces are rectangles and a lateral edge is an altitude
Lateral area
The sum of the areas of the lateral faces
Surface area
The sum of the lateral area and the area of the two bases
Pyramid
A polyhedron in which one face can be any polygon and the other faces are triangles that meet at a common vertex
Regular pyramid
A pyramid whose base is a regular polygon and whose lateral faces are congruent isosceles triangles
Composite space figure
A three dimensional figure that is the combination of two or more simpler figures
Sphere
The set of all points in space equidistant from a given point called the center
Great circle
If the center of a circle is also the center of a sphere
Hemispheres
A great circle divides a great circle into two hemispheres
Similar solids
Solids that have the same shape and all their corresponding dimensions are proportional
Similarity ratio
The ratio of corresponding linear dimensions of two similar solids
Lateral and surface areas of a prism
The lateral area of a right prism is the product of the perimeter of the base and the height.
LA = ph
The surface area of a right prism is the sum of the lateral area in the area of the two bases
SA = LA + 2B
Lateral and surface areas of a cylinder
LA = 2pi(rh) SA = LA + 2B or SA = 2pi(rh) + 2pi(r)^2
