Ch. 11 Complex Surgical Instruments Flashcards
(38 cards)
Name the 3 power sources of complex instruments.
Pneumatic/ Gas
Electric
Battery
What are the advantages of powered instruments?
Powered instruments greatly reduce the brute force required and decreased the time required to perform surgeries.
When are electric-powered instruments used?
electric-powered instruments are used when lightweight instruments are needed for procedures where access is limited.
What are the most common problems associated with electric-powered equipment?
- Damage to electrical parts during cleaning & sterilization
- Condensation entering the equipment
- Electric contacts becoming worn and affect equipment handling
What is something you should never do with any powered instrument?
Do not immerse powered instruments in any solution.
Do not leave moist.
What are the points of inspection for a pneumatic-powered instruments?
Check the hose for nicks and other possible damage.
What must you do to a hose for proper inspection?
Hoses must be pressurized for proper inspection ( check IFU’s)
How are inner components of a pneumatic instrument protected during sterilization?
Use a decon hose to protect inner components.
Explain the process of creating a decon hose.
Cut small pieces of damaged pneumatic hoses, placing both regulator ends on the hose, and mark the hose in some way.
What is a popular way to mark a decon hose or battery?
A popular way of marking the battery or hose is with red tape.
What are the primary reasons for hoses failing?
Sterilization issues are the primary reason an air hose fail because heat breaks down the rubber and O-rings, and causes air leaks.
Name common powered Surgical Instruments.
Dermatomes Cebatomes Sternal Saws Dental Drills Micro drill Wire Drivers Saws
What are common reasons for powered instruments failing?
- Corrosion of internal components from condensation, steam, fluid invasion or improper cleaning
- Physical damage due to mishandling
- Lack of or improper preventive maintenance.
Name 3 types of Saws
Oscillating, Sagittal and Reciprocating
How are decon batteries created?
Locate a dead, unrepairable battery for each style of powered surgical instrument. Mark with red tape.
What causes corrosion in powered instruments?
Fluid invasion; Water or cleaning solutions
What does AAMI stand for?
Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation
What does ANSI stand for?
American National Standards Institute
What does AORN stand for?
Association of Operating Room Nurses
What is the primary function of laparoscopic instruments?
laparoscopic instruments are special instruments used with operative endoscopes.
What is the first step to inspect the insulation of a laparoscopic instrument?
Ensure the insulation fit tightly against the collar, and does not slide back.
What is the purpose of decon batteries?
Decon batteries keep fluid from entering the unit.
Name 3 types of ring handles for laparoscopic instruments.
Free handle- no ratchet
Spring handle
Ratchet handle
True or False
Laparoscopic instruments don’t need to be cleaned manually.
False: Most can be mechanically cleaned however, a careful manual cleaning must happen first.
