Transaction Processing System (TPS)
Captures and stores transaction data using batch, online or real-time processing at an operational level.
Examples of TPS
Sales order processing
Accounting systems
Management information systems (MIS)
An integrated system for supporting operations and decision making at a tactical level. Uses data gathered from TPS and puts it into a pre-determined output format

Reporting systems
Enterprise Resource Planning Systems (ERPS)
Integrates information across the whole company. It is a commercial software package installed on a Database Management System.

Balanced scorecard performance reporting
Decision Support System (DSS)
Manipulation of information to support decision making on a tactical level. Has a user friendly style and assists with unstructured problems

Executive Information Support (EIS)
Present selected/focused information for senior executives to use on a strategic level. It will be highly visual and incorporates internal and external data

Expert Systems
Present decision options to non-expert users. Modifies its knowledge database in accordance with its own results.

Strategic Enterprise Management System (SEMS)
Assists with strategic decision making, incorporating tools such as ABM

Information Strategy
The plan a business has to create and develop its information systems
Information Systems Strategy
A long-term plan that shows how the information systems will support the entity’s business strategy. The information should be acquired, retained and shared.
Information Technology Strategy
Defines the specific systems that are needed to satisfy the organisations information needs e.g. EPRS and EIS
Information management strategy
Concerned with methods by which information is stored, provided to users, protected or backed-up. Considers methods of database use
Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS)
Integrated, computer-controlled production systems, capable of producing any range of parts and switching quickly and economically between them.
Computer integrated manufacturing (CIM)
Brings together advanced manufacturing technology and modern quality control into a single computerised coherent system, which controls the whole production process.
Computer aided manufacturing (CAM)
Uses computer software to facilitate and automate manufacturing processes
Optimised production technology (OPT)
Computerised methods for scheduling production requirements - It uses a known capacity of constraints to identify and eliminate bottlenecks
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)
A standardised method of transferring data between different computer systems which often facilitates and reflects a close relationship between organisations.
