equal rights for African Americans; Johnson’s domestic passion; began in 1954
consumer society
society preoccupied with buying goods, not producing them (1950s Western countries)

feminism; late 1960s renewed interest in women asserting for rights
Charles de Gaulle
war hero; 1946: established new French gov’t (Fourth Republic)–>withdrew—>returned; elected president of Fifth Republic; invest in nuclear arms; economy grew FAST; France became important industrial producer/exporter; want France “returned to glory”; resigned 1969 after student protests
European Economic Community
Common Market; created in the Rome Treaty (France, W. Germany, Benelux countries); free-trade area made of six nations; no tariffs on each other’s goods; economic benefit

youngest elected president; killed by assassin Nov 22, 1963; Johnson took power

leader of growing movement for racial equality; Aug 1963: led march on Washington D.C.; advocate passive disobedience

Aug 11-17, 1965: LA riot that outburst in Watts community; sparked because of black man arrested by white police man out of suspicion; many people were angered by horrible city conditions

Liberal Party leader in Canada; create Canada’s welfare state; enact social security system (Canada Pension Plan) and national health insurance
NATO
created 1949 as result of division of Cold War; France left NATO for more freedom (de Gaulle)
student revolts
May 1968: series of student revolts—>de Gaulle resign; American protests against Vietnam War; disappeared around 1970s
France’s 5th Republic
1958: new constitution for 5th Republic by de Gaulle; president would have more power; people were enthusiastic
West Germany/East Germany
(W) miraculous recover under Adenauer of Christian Democratic Union; (E) still controlled by Soviets
Labour Party
(GB) after the war defeated Conservative Party headed by Churchill; promised reforms, esp. in social welfare; Clement Attlee was new prime minister; create welfare state
