Ch 13: brain and cranial nerves Flashcards
(35 cards)
Cerebrum
Conscious thought, motor, somatosensory
(Bigger brain)
Brainstem
Connect spinal cord to brain
- 3 parts*
Cerebellum
Controls local motion
Example : balance, posture
(smaller brain)
Diencephalon
For parts, thalamus, epithalamus, hypothalamus, and sub thalamus
Nuclei
Collection of cell bodies
Compartments in brain stem
-midbrain (superior)
-Pons (in between)
-medullaoblongata (inferior)
The function of brainstem of moving muscles
Tracks ascend toward the brain from spinal cord, and carry sensory to communicate to brain. The tracks will descend downwards to the muscle, carrying motor sensory to move muscle.
Left hemisphere
Dominant and speech
Early embryo too late embryo
Adult to cavity of the brain development
Cavity to function
Basal nuclei
Unintentional movement when at rest
Reticular formation
Control cyclic activities
- sleep wake cycle
EC
Thalamus
Somatosensory relay center
Epithalamus
Contains nuclei to olfaction and pineal gland
Hypothalamus
Regulates and produce hormones and endocrine function
Medial geniculate nucleus of thalamus
Auditory informAtion
Lateral geniculate nucleus
Visual information
What does the left brain control?
Right side of body
What system is medulla oblongata
Respiratory center
Where is cranial nerve one located?
Superior aspect of nasal cavity
Olfactory nerve
What does the hypoglossa do
Provides movement to entire tongue
 What does insula do?
Taste
Cortexes
1° motor cortex: frontal
1° somato cortex: parietal
 1° auditory: temporal
