Ch 2. Human Disease Terms Flashcards
(30 cards)
Allergen
Environment substances that cause harm
Allergy
The immune system is too intense or hypersensitive to a environmental substance (allergen)
Congenital
Hereditary diseases that are present at birth
Neoplasm
New growths, commonly called tumors
Malignant
Deadly or progressing to death
Benign
Not deadly, limited growth, easily removed
Encapsulated
Enclosed in a capsule
Cancer
Any malignant tumor
Metastatic
(Cancer) Spread from site of origin to a secondary site in the body
Trauma
Physical injury from an external force
Infection
Invasion of microorganisms into tissue that causes cell or tissue damage
Inflammation
Protective immune response that is triggered by a injury or irritant
Autoimmunity
The bodies lymphocytes cannot identify the body’s own self-antigens, which are harmless. They attack the healthy cells.
Hypoxia
Not enough oxygen
Anoxia
No oxygen
Atrophy
Without growth, decrease in cell size, which leads to decrease in size of tissue and organs
Hypertrophy
Excessive growth, increase in the size of the cell leading to and increase in tissue and organ size
Hyperplasia
Increased growth, increase in cell number that is commonly due to hormonal stimulation
Dysplasia
Hyper growth, usually follows hyperplasia and is a alternation in size, shape, and organization of cells
Metaplasia
Changed growth, cellular adaption in which cell changes to another cell
Neoplasia
New growth, development of a new type of cell with an uncontrolled growth pattern
Ischemia
Cell hypoxia caused by decreased blood flow. A cell without oxygen can not produce and eventually dies
Necrosis
Cellular death
Cachexia
Describes a patient with a thin, wasted, ill appearance
