Ch 26 Reproductive System Flashcards
(63 cards)
What is Meiosis?
2 successive cell divisions that result in haploid cells
What is Haploid?
Half the normal chromosomes
What are the 5 phases of First Meiotic Division?
Interphase, Prophase I, Metaphase I, Anaphase I, then Telophase I.
What is Interphase?
Period when the cell is carrying on normal metabolic functions and the DNA duplicates
What is Prophase I?
Deplicated DNA condenses and the coil tightens, nucleolus disappears, centrioles form the mitotic spindles
What is Metaphase I?
Lining up of chromosomes along the middle of the spindle.
What is Anaphase I?
Separation of the duplicated chromosomes and migration to opposite ends of the cell
What is Telophase I?
Chromosomes uncoil, nuclear memebrane reforms in each end of the cell and the cell begins to divide.
What is Second Meiotic Division?
Both daughter cells undergo Prophase II, Metaphase II, Anaphase II, and Telophase II>
What is Prophase II?
Chromosomes condense and coil.
What is Metaphase II?
Lining up of chromosomes along the middle of the mitotic spindle
What is Anaphase II?
Cetromeres separate freeing chromatids to move to opposite poles of the spindle.
What is telophase II?
Chromosomes uncoil, nuclear membrane reforms in each end of the cells and the two cells each begin to divide forming 4 cells with half the chromosomes.
After Mitosis, the formation of the primary _____ is arested in phrophase I.
Oocyte
When is the secondary oocyte arrested?
In metaphase II.
If fertization occurs then the secondary oocyte completes what?
Meosis II, with one fertilized ovum, 3 polar bodies that all degenerate
When do the oocyte mature?
During puberty
What is the total # of chromosomes a person gets from mom and dad?
46
Which hormone does the Hypothalamus secreted which in turn act upons?
Gonadotropin
Which hormones does the Anterior pituitary secrete that stimulates spermatogensis?
LH and FSH
Why is Inhibin secreted by the sustentacular cells?
It inhibits the anterior pituitary from oversecreting FSH.
When do the secondary sex hormones start to develop?
During puberty
What are Androgens?
Lipid soluable hormones produced by the interstitial cells of the testes and in small amounts in the adrenal cortex.
What does the testosterone do?
Functions to develop both primary and secondary male sexual characteristics and is controlled by age
