(38 cards)

1
Q

7 rules for oxidation states

A
  1. free element must have ox state of 0
  2. sum of ox states must add up to 0 or the total charge on the molecule
  3. group 1 metals have ox states of +1, group 2 metals have ox states of +2
  4. Ox state of fluorine is -1.
  5. H usually has oxidation state of +1
  6. O usually has ox state of -2
  7. in binary compounds with metals, group 17 elements have ox states of -1, group 16 has -2, group 15 has -3
