Ch 3 Two Cultures in Philosophy Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is the problem with the distinction?
It doesn’t work geographically. Anglo-Austrian anyone.
Which philosophers disagree with each other
Merleau ponty and Ayers
What is it then?
A professional self description starting in 1970s in USA. Continental philosophy.
What might partisans say?
Precise, logical philosophy versus unclear nonsense speculations. Did the sun exist before humans? Yes versus the question makes no sense.
But a professional self description wouldn’t have much bite if it didn’t overlay what?
An older divide simplified by ideas such as French rationalism; British empiricism and German metaphysics
What is the relevance of mill?
Identified a continental Coleridge v benthamite approach. Knowing the 2 would give you all. Meaning and truth. Thought of Bentham as practical successor of humean scepticism applied to gov and law
Who is conservative and who progressive
Viewed through mill roles are reversed and Coleridge continental preserves traditional and Bentham is reformist.
Phenomenology came to be continental through what?
Inclusion of French post structuralists some of whom more or less hostile to phenomenology. Lesser extent lacan, Derrida lyotard. Greater delueze and Foucault.
How might one view mills belief about continental as relating to Hegel?
Need to view whole and not just part of whole. Checks and balances. Bit like dialectic.
