What are reasons/evidence?
Provides answer for why someone makes a particular opinion, and holds a particular decision
Beliefs, metaphors or other statements offered to support or justify a conclusion
Basis for creating credibility of a conclusion, the logic
Proves why the conclusion is right
Rationale for why we should believe something and that facts that assist in convincing listener of the conclusion
Argument characteristics
INTENT: An intent to convince someone to act, feel, or react a certain way
Varied quality
3 essential components: Issue, reason, and conclusion
Analyzing argument encourages openness to other’s values
Why is the reason important for conclusion?
You cannot determine the worth of a conclusion without the reasons
Reason is essential for evaluating the credibility of a conclusion
Will likely influence whether or not we will accept the conclusion
Where reason came from is also important
Bias
Quality that makes something likely to happen or that makes someone likely to think or behave in a particular way
Similar to affective attitude
Positive or negative feelings about someone or something that will influence how you think and behave
