Ch. 4 Flashcards
(6 cards)
Correlational study
A study in which the researcher does not control an independent variable but determines whether two variables are related to each other
Experimental study
A study in which the researcher manipulates a condition (independent variable) that is expected to produce a change in the subject’s behavior (dependent variable)
Theory
Integrated and interprets diverse observations in an attempt to explain a phenomenon
EEG
Electroencephalogram, recorded from two electrodes on the scalp over the area of interest; electronic amplifier detects the combined electrical activity of all the neurons between the two electrodes
TMS
Transcranial magnetic stimulation; noninvasive brain stimulation technique that uses a magnetic coil to induce a voltage in brain tissue
Blood-brain barrier
The brain’s protection from toxic substances and neurotransmitters in the bloodstream; the small openings in the capillary walls prevent large molecules from passing through unless they are fat soluble or carried through by special transporters
