Matthew
Matthew was one of the twelve apostles and was a tax collector. His main audience were people of Jewish and Christian beliefs. Matthew depicts Jesus as the new moses.
MARK
Mark is the earliest Gospel writer. His Gospel is written for gentile converts. He is an associate of St. Paul, and a disciple of St. Peter. He has the shortest and earliest for the four Gospels.
LUKE
Luke was a physician before he became one of Jesus’s disciples. His Gospel is known for its detailed imagery. Luke presents Jesus as a very compassionate and humble person.
JOHN
John was a fisherman prior to before he met Jesus. John was present in many major events in Jesus’ life. Because John was a close follower of Jesus, John had first hand experience.
MATTHEW infancy story
- Avoids Jurusalem
- The spotlight shines on Joseph, who is the one that receives divine guidance of in dreams
- Matthew mainly portrays Jesus as a teacher
- Matthew thinks of Jesus as sort of a living Torah
- Draws themes from the old Testament.
- Purpose was to show that Jesus fulfilled Old Testament Prophecies
LUKE Infancy story
- Portrays Jesus’s family observantly going to Juresalem
- Mary shines, hearing and keeping God’s voice
- Luke portrays Jesus as a bringer off authentic peace
- Jesus in Luke is compassionate and kind.
THEREFORE - why are these infancy narratives so different?
These infancy narratives are so different because they focus on different elements. For example, Matthew focuses on Joseph and the genealogy of Jesus, tracing it back to King David. These Gospels were also written for different audiences, for example Matthew’s Gospel was most likely written for a Jewish audience, while Luke was for a wider range of audiences.
John the Baptist:
John the Baptist is born from Elizabeth. He is a very important figure in the Salvation History of God. His birth parallels that of Jesus, but also echoes the momentous occasion of the birth of Isaac to Abraham and Sarah. He was a Jewish prophet who baptized Jesus.
Zechariah:
Zechariah is the father to John the Baptist, who is also a priest. One day in the temple, the angel Gabrial came down and told him that he and his wife would have a child.
Elizabeth
Elizabeth is the mother of John the Baptist, the wife of Zechariah, and the maternal aunt of Mary.
Mary
Mary is the mother of Jesus. She is a virgin who was blessed with a baby through the divinity of the Holy Spirit.
Joseph
Jesus father in human form. Man of the house, Lineage traces to David
Gabriel
Gabriel is an Arc Angel who announced to the Virgin Mary that she is pregnant
Simeon & Anna
Faithful Jews who waited all their life for the Messiah. At the temple, they recognized Jesus as the promised one.
The Magi
The Magi or three wisemen, followed the stars from the East to Bethlehem in search of a newborn King. There they found Mary and the baby Jesus and offered them gifts.

What is the purpose of John’s baptism?
It was a sign of repentance as they prepared for the upcoming Messiah. Being baptized by John demonstrated a recognition of one’s sin, a desire for spiritual cleansing.

- God comes to Jesus, signifying that his mission is about to begin
- A dove descends from the sky, a symbol of joy, innocence, freedom, power, and peace.

- To show perfect submission to the Father’s will
- To foreshadow the Baptism of his death for the remission of our sins

He resisted Jesus by staying truthful to the Lord. After ever temptation Jesus would say lines that would rebuke Satan.

Well if I was in the desert stranded for 40 days, I would probably want the bread.
