How do dogs communicate their emotions?
through their body language
What is active submission?
The dog rolls over on her back looking up at you (tongue out panting) - this dog knows that you are the leader and she wants you to approach her - going slowly
What is passive submission?
this dog knows that you are the leader but she will come to you. - tail wagging - tongue out - panting - walking toward you
What is playbow?
this is an invitation to play with her - front part of body is lowered, tail wagging - happy looking face - tongue out panting
What is aggression?
This dog does not recognize you as the leader. She may attack you - teeth showing, growling, tail straight up - weight on the front legs
What is fear?
This dog is on the defensive. She is unpredictable and could attack. - -weight is on the back of her legs - teeth showing- bent down, ears back, tail tucked under her body - remember, you must always maintain the role of a firm, but gentle leader with your companion dog to assure a happy relationship
What is separation anxiety?
It is a form of distress, anxiety, and often even panic that occurs in the absense of the owner or another attachment figure.

Is aggression a normal form of communication among dogs?
Yes - the subtle visual cues and threats associaed with aggression are often used in a highy ritualized manner between dogs, so that no injury occurs pg 153

the dog
