Ch. 5 Flashcards
(17 cards)
Linear Equation
An equation that can be written in standard form
Linear Function
Graph that forms a straight line
Y-intercept
Y-coordinate of the point where the graph intersects the x-axis
X always equals 0
X-intercept
X-coordinate of the point where the graph intersects the y-axis
Y always equals 0
Rate of Change
A ratio that compares the amount of change in a dependent variable to the amount of change in the independent variable
Rise
The difference in the y-values of two points on a line
Run
The difference in the x-variable of two points on a line
Slope
The ratio of rise to run for any two points on the line
Direct variation
A special type of linear relationship that can be written in the form y=kx
Constant of variation
Nonzero constant (k)
Parallel lines
Lines in the same plane that have no points in common. They don’t intersect
Perpendicular lines
Lines that intersect to form right angles (90*)
Family of Functions
A set of functions whose graphs have basic characteristics in common
Parent Function
The most basic function in a family
Y=x
Transformation
A change in position or size of a figure
Rotation
A transform nation about a point. You can think of it as a “turn”
Reflection
A transformation across a line that produces a mirror image.
