CH 6&7 King Flashcards

1
Q

What is a lesson that can be drawn from the story of Saul or David?

A

From the story of David one can learn the importance of staying true to one’s moral character and loyalty to God. David is chosen by God not by his appearance (short stature) but because of his good heart. However, overtime David commits the sins of adultery and murder as he loses his touch with his good soul, and faces the consequence of family tragedy. In conclusion, the lesson is to push away sinful thoughts and maintain a virtuous heart.

Q

Briefly explain where David went wrong in the Bathsheba story. Include how his sin starts smaller and evolves over time. This should include four main sins that we touched on in class.

A

Sins: lust, covetous, (internal concept), adultery, dishonesty to God and others, murder

Scholars believe his sin first started when he saw Bathsheba bathing. This shows the sin of lust and covetous since he knew that Bathsheba was married to his ally Uriah. In class we touched on how although others can not see certain internal type sin it still exists. However, the sin evolved when he took action and committed adultery with Bathsheba. Whether Bathsheba was innocent or not, David knew she was married to another. He is then not honest with God or Uriah as he tires to get Uriah to have sex with Bathsheba. If Uriah would have done this the baby could have seemed like Uriah’s own. This sin grew furthermore when he commits the sin of murder. Although he did not directly kill Uriah, Bathsheba’s husband, he orders Uriah to the front of the army to be killed. Then David is dishonest again when he believes God would not find out his sins, but Nathan later reveals that God knows all. For these reasons, David’s sin grows as he lacks the strength to push away his immoral thoughts.

Who is Nathan? b. How does he help David?

A

JUST PROPHET
Nathan is a prophet that often gives advice to David. He helps David by showing him the seriousness of his sins. Nathan asks David to judge a immoral character in a parable and then reveals that the character depicts David. David then realizes his wrongdoings and later repents.
