What was the Hidalgo revolution?
This colonists of new Spain were impoverished. Father Hidalgo called for a rebellion against Spanish authorities. He was executed for treason, but inspired more followers to continue work for ultimate liberation from Spanish rule. He got the ball rolling on the revolution.

Gutierrez Magee expedition
Goal was to achieve Mexican independence from Spain. Gutierrez de Laura and Augustus McGee lead an expedition in one several battles against Spanish troops. In 1813 Gutierrez de Laura helped set up a provisional government of the Mexican state of Texas. He was its first governor.

James Long expeditions
In 1819 and 1820 Gutierrez de Lara returned to Texas to continue the fight from Mexican independence. The attempts failed, but he was elected governor of the Mexican state of Tamaulipas in 1824.

Republican army of the North
The eventual name of the Gutierrez-Magee troops who fought against Mexico. They captured Goliad, but a Spanish force later surrounded Goliad. McGehee suddenly died. Spanish forces suffered heavy loss and retreated to San Antonio. The victorious leaders issued a declaration of independence for Texas.

The Spanish led by general joaquin de arrendondo won this battle against the Republican army and basically killed everyone.

Long invasion
James Long led 300 rebels to Texas and captured Nacogdoches. They declared Texas free. Gene Laffitte refused to help them because he didn’t think they stood a chance against Spain. The town was captured and most people were killed. Long was taken to Mexico City and killed.

Even though father Hidalgo was killed in the rebellion, he started a movement where others continue to fight against Spain in order to achieve Mexican independence. Ultimately they were successful.
