What is Asceticism?
The renunciation of worldly pleasures.
What is a Brother?
Men who take religious vows, usually poverty, chastity, and obedience. A Brother is not ordained to the priesthood.
What are Canons?
Priests who lived near the monks and who share common property, prayer, and meals, and sometimes even stay at the monastery.
What is a Chasuble?
The outer garment worn by the bishop or priest over the alb and stole. It is the same color as the stole and the liturgical season.
What does Cloistered refer to?
The part of a monastery reserved only for the monks or nuns who reside in that monastery.
What is Consecrated Life?
A permanent state of life recognized by the Church and chosen freely by men and women in response to Christ’s call to perfection. It is characterized by profession of the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience.
What is a Convent?
Residences for communities of women.
What does Eremitic mean?
Referring to a hermit or religious recluse.
What is an Eschatological Sign?
Something that points to eternal life.
What is the Gospel?
Good news.
What is a Habit?
The distinctive garb that many consecrated persons wear.
What does Mendicant mean?
Given to begging; beggar.
What is a Monk?
Male members of a monastic or contemplative order.
What is a Novitiate?
A period of intensive study after which a candidate progresses to a more intensive time of study, usually lasting two years.
What are Nuns?
Women religious living a cloistered, contemplative life in a monastery.
What is a Postulant?
One who is beginning formation with a religious community.
What is a Sister?
Members of a religious order or congregation of women devoted to active service and/or contemplation.
What is a Stole?
A long narrow cloth worn by the bishop, priest, or deacon, originally worn by Jewish rabbis as a sign of their authority.
What is a Veil?
A piece of fine material worn by women to protect or conceal the face; symbolizes humility and modesty.
What are Vows?
Acts of devotion in which a person dedicates himself or herself to God or promises God some good work.
Who is St. Augustine?
As bishop, encouraged his priests to live in community; wrote one of the first rules for religious life.
Who is St. Benedict of Nursia?
The ‘Father of Western Monasticism’; established a rule for monastic life that became the standard for centuries.
Who is St. Peter?
First among the Apostles, upon whom Christ founded the Church; first pope.
Who is St. Vincent de Paul?
Founded the first community of sisters that was not cloistered.
