Ch 8.2 What is overfishing? Flashcards

1
Q

What are the causes of overfishing?

A

Overfishing occurs when the fish catch exceeds the number of fish stock and the fish will not have enough numbers to reproduce. Fish resources will gradually be depleted.

Q

What are the major factors of overfishing?

A

Growing world population -> increasing demand for seafood -> catch a large number of fish even the baby and unwanted species -> decrease in fish stock -> depletion of fish resources
OR Poor fishery management-> catch a large number of fish -> decrease in stocks -> depletion of fish resources.

Q

What are the negative impacts of overfishing?

A

Overfishing-> reduction or extinction of some marine species -> reduce food for the marine species that feed on them -> some marine species disappear
Overfishing -> destructive fishing methods -> destroy marine habitats -> some marine species disappear
Both break the food chain and reduce the biodiversity of marine

Q

What is the process of bottom trawling?

A

First, as the boat moved, the net catches all the fish which include unwanted species and baby fish. Second, the dragging of the net stirs up the sand and mud, -> water becomes unclear and the sunlight is blocked -> marine plants cannot make food through photosynthesis -> seafood and coral reefs are damaged .

Q

What are to socio-economic impact for the food supply?

A

Since food is one of the important source of protein, the depletion of fish resources will threaten our food supply.

Q

What are the socio-economic impact in terms of the fishing industry and tourism industry?

A

Overfishing leads to the depletion of fish resources so the job related to this industry will reduce and it affects the income who work in this industry as the destructive fishing methods damage the coral reefs -> fewer tourists -> income of the hotels, shops and restaurants decrease
