Ch. 9 Chem Bonding, Molecular Geometry, Hybridization Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is a 3D arrangement of atoms in a molecule?
Molecular Geometry
—- affects physical & chemical properties
— consider bond angles & bond lengths
What accounts for geometric arrangement of electron pairs around a central atom so that electrons move as far apart as possible from each other bc of electron/electron repulsion?
VSEPR- Valence Shell Electron-Pair Repulsion Theory
What are the 2 different types of geometries?
ABx- no lone pairs on central atom
ABxEy - central atom has lone pairs
What affects the size of the bond angles?
Repulsion (repulsive forces) between electrons
Steps for applying VSEPR :
1) draw the Lewis Structures
2) determine A, B, & E
3) predict geometry of atom
Molecules with no lone pairs on the centra atom have what type of geometry?
ABx
A = central atom
B = surrounding atoms
x = # of B surrounding atoms
What geometry is AB2?
