Fredonian Rebellion
In 1825, Haden Edward was given a land grant that let him settle 800 families in Nacodoches, but people already lived there. He tried to kick out the settlers, but the Mexican government revoked the land grant. Edward then declared independence from Mexico and made the Fredonian Republic.
Meir y Teran Report
Meir y Teran went to inspect Texas settlements in 1828, and said that American settlers outnumbered Mexican settlers by 10 to 1. He advised to place more troops, attract more Mexican trade, and increase trade between Mexico.
Law of April 6th
In 1830, the law stated that immigrants from the U.S. are banned, that all empresario contracts are cancelled if they aren’t completed, encouraged Mexican & European immigration, outlawed slavery in Texas, Added more Mexican soldiers/forts in Texas, and added taxes/duties to all foreign goods to Texas.
Centralist Party
Came to power in 1829, were more strict on colonists, wanted central gov. to have more control, and Texas hates the party.
Federalist Party
Came to power in 1820’s, left colonists alone, wanted states to have more control, and Texas likes this party.
Stephen F. Austin.
Was an empresario that continued his dad’s work and was the most successful colony in Texas. After asking to have Texas to have a temporary state government set-up in 1833, he was sent to prison for a year and he feared Santa Anna was becoming a dictator.
Turtle Bayou Resolutions
Here settlers declared allegiance to Mexican Federalists, that their actions were against Bradburn and not Mexico, and their loyalty was to Santa Anna.
Battle Velasco
John Austin got a cannon, Ugartechea attempted to stop him and a fight broke out. Ugartechea surrended.
Santa Anna
A newly made president in 1833, that could possibly be becoming a dictator.
Convention of 1833
Texians said that they wanted to resume U.S. immigration, Texas to be exempt from import taxes, and to have separate statehood for Texas.
