Phases of the Menstrual Cycle
Menstruation
Follicular Phase (Early/Late)
Ovulation
Luteal Phase*
Progesterone highest?
Luteal phase
LH peak during _____ phase
during ovulation
Marks the first day of a new menstrual cycle
Menstruation: Discharge of bloody fluid containing endometrial and blood cells
How long does menstruation last?
typically 3-5 days
How does menstruation occur?
It is triggered by the decline in estrogen and progesterone(especially progesterone) from the last cycle
What causes endometrial tissue to die?
Vasoconstriction
How is endometrial tissue expelled out of the uterus?
uterine contractions
4 main hormones in the menstrual cycle
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
Luteinising Hormone (LH)
Estrogen
Progesterone
2 Phases of the Menstrual Cycle
- Follicular Phase
- Luteal Phase
What is the Follicular phase?
When ovum is still in the follicle
How long is a typical menstrual cycle?
28 Days
How long does Luteal Phase last?
ALWAYS 14 days
How long does Follicular Phase last?
varies from 8-14 days. It is the reason for the variation in the duration of menstrual cycle
What is the Luteal phase?
when ovum is released from the follicle and into the fallopian tube
What is responsible for regulating a large number of hormones?
Pituitary glands
Early Follicular Phase
Hypothalamus releases Gonadotrophin Releasing Hormone (GnRH) which releases gonadotrophins (FSH and LH) from the ANTERIOR pituitary gland
Main job of FSH
Stimulate the development of the follicles
Main job of LH
To cause ovulation
Primordial follicles
immature eggs in the ovaries. about 200,000 in each ovaries but not all are viable eggs
What secretes estrogen?
Granulosa cells around the FSH-stimulated follicles
Estrogen
Steroid sex hormones that promote female secondary characteristics. Also stimulates the development of endometrium.
Also causes cervix mucus to become thinner to allow faster sperm travel
What causes a negative feedback to the pituitary glands and the hypothalamus to suppress the release of LH and FSH?
Estrogen
What happens when there is an INCREASE in LH?
Causes the follicles to reach the surface of ovary and release the ovum (unfertilized eggs)
