Ch.1: Foundations Of Environmental Science Flashcards
(33 cards)
What are Natural Resources?
-substances and energy sources needed for survival
What is Environmental Science?
-the study of how the natural world works and our interactions with it.
What are Renewable Natural Resources?
-can be replenished
What are Non-Renewable Natural Resources?
- unavailable after depletion
- oil, coal and minerals
What is Ecosystem Services?
-services that arise from the normal functioning of natural resources
How are Ecosystem Services degraded?
-degraded by: depleting resources, destroying habitat and generating pollution
What is the Agricultural Revolution?
- crops and livestock
- stable food supplies
What is the Industrial Revolution?
- urbanized society powered by fossil fuels (oil, gas, coal)
- sanitation and medicine
- pesticides and fertilizers
What is an Ecological Footprint?
-the environmental impact of a person or population.
What does Overshoot mean?
-humans have surpassed the Earth’s capacity to support us
What are Natural Sciences?
- disciplines that examine the natural world
- environmental science programs
What are Social Sciences?
- disciplines that examine the values and human behavior
- environmental studies program
What is Environmentalism?
- a social movement
- tries to protect the natural world from human caused changes
Define Science.
-a systematic process for learning about the world and testing our understanding of it
What is Observational (descriptive) Science?
- information is gathered about organisms, systems, processes, etc.
- can’t be manipulated by experiments
- phenomena are observed and measured
What is Hypothesis-driven Science?
- targeted research
- experiments test hypotheses using the scientific method
What is a Hypothesis?
-a statement that tries to explain a question
What is a Prediction?
-specific statements that can be directly tested
What is a Variable?
-a condition that can change
What is an Independent Variable?
-a variable that can be manipulated
What is a Dependent Variable?
-a variable that depends on the independent variable
What is a Controlled Experiment?
- one in which the effects of all the variables are controlled
- except the independent variable
What is a control?
-an un-manipulated point of comparison
What is Quantitative Data?
-information that uses numbers (scientists like more)
