Ch1 Termonology Flashcards
(18 cards)
Anatomy
The study of the organ systems that make up our human organism and their relationships with other organs
Physiology
The study of our human bodily functions
Pathology
The study of diseases
Cell
The smallest structural and functional unit of an organism
Tissue
Composed of similar cells working together to perform a specific function
Organ
Consist of 2 or more different tissues working together to perform a specific function.
Organ system
Organs interacting together
Homeostasis
Existence of a stable internal environment
Negative feedback
A variation outside normal limits triggers an automatic response that corrects the situation.
Positive feedback
The initial stimulus produces a response that reinforces that stimulus. (Breast feeding, orgasm, blood clot, child birth).
Transverse plane
Seperates body into superior/inferior portions
Frontal/coronal plane
Seperates body into anterior/posterior portions.
Sagittal/median plane (midsagittal)
Seperates into left/right body portions.
Excretion
The process of eliminating waste matter
Respiration
The action of breathing. Oxygen intake for carbon dioxide release.
Chemical
Of or relating to chemistry or the interactions of substances as studied in chemistry. A compound or substance.
Four types of tissues
Areolar tissue, adipose tissue, reticular tissue, dense regular and irregular connective tissue.
Organ systems
The integumentary system. The skeletal system. The muscular system. The nervous system. The endocrine system. The cardiovascular system. The lymphatic system. The respiratory system. The digestive system. The urinary system. The male reproductive system. The female reproductive system.
