primary election
the process by which voters, either the general public or members of a political party, can indicate their preference for a candidate in an upcoming general election or by-election, thus narrowing the field of candidates.
closed election
registered party members can vote only in their own party’s primary. Semi-closed systems, however, allow unaffiliated voters to participate as well.
open primary
a primary election in which voters are not required to declare a party affiliation.
crossover voting
In primary elections in the United States, crossover voting refers to a behavior in which voters cast ballots for a party with which they are not traditionally affiliated.
runoff primary
a second primary election held in some states to decide which of the two highest candidates for an office in the first primary will be awarded the party nomination.
general election
A general election is an election in which all or most members of a given political body are chosen. These are usually held for a nation’s primary legislative body, as distinguished from by-elections and local elections.
initiative
Procedure whereby a certain number of voters may, by petition, propose a law or constitutional amendment and have it submitted to the voters.
referendum
Procedure for submitting to popular vote measures passed by the legislature or proposed amendments to a state constitution.
recall
in certain polities, voters can remove an elected official from office through a direct vote before that official’s term has ended.

a body of electors established by the United States Constitution constituted every four years for the sole purpose of electing the president and vice president of the United States.
