Ch12 Flashcards
Deglutition mechanism
Coordinated sequence of muscular contractions in the oral cavity involved in swollowing
Effacement
Abnormal flattening of the contour of a structure
Impingement
Contact or pressure between two structures
Loculated effusion
Collection of fluid in a body cavity whose distribution is limited by adjacent normal or abnormal structures
Opacification
Increase in the density of a tissue or region, with increased resistance to X-rays.
Ankle mortise
The normal articulation between the talus and the distal tibia and fibula
Sacralization
Abnormal bony fusion between the fifth lumbar vertebra and S1
Tibial plateau
Flattened surface at the upper end of the anterior aspect of the thigh
Lucent defect
Abnormal zone of decreased resistance to x-rays
Spurring
Formation of one or more jagged osteophytes
Peristaltic waves
Muscular contractions passing along a tubular organ where contents are advanced
Hypoaeration
Abnormal reduction in the amount of air in the lung tissue
Interstitial markings
The radiographic appearance of lung tissue. As Air in the lungs
Acoustical shadowing
Inability of ultrasound to reach the delineate structures located in the darkened areas of an organ or tissue that reflects a large amount of US
Radionuclide
Radioactive isotope. A species of atom that emits radioactivity
Sensitize
To introduce radioactive material not a fluid, tissue or space
Consolidative process
An abnormal condition that increases the density of a tissue or region
Sonolucent
Offering relatively little resistance to ultrasound waves generating few or no echoes
Demineralization
Reduction in the amount of calcium present in the bone
Tertiary contractions
Deviated narrowing of the esophagus, occurring after the primary and secondary waves of swallowing
